How it’s given For adults, the flu vaccine is given as an injection in the upper arm. When it starts to work The vaccine takes about 2 weeks to provide protection. It should protect you throughout the flu season. Possible side effects Most side effects are mild and short-lived. These may include: Soreness, redness, or swelling where the injection was given Fever (temperature of 38°C or above) Mild sweating or shivering Headache Aches and pains Tiredness If you experience these, rest and consider taking paracetamol to ease discomfort. Serious side effects Serious side effects are very rare. In rare cases, people may have a severe allergic reaction. Very rarely, Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) has been reported. This condition affects the nerves, causing inflammation, pain, numbness, muscle weakness, and difficulty walking. Importantly, you are far more likely to develop GBS from catching the flu itself than from receiving the flu vaccine.
